All iPhone users will notice that the battery of the device gets shorter and shorter the longer you use it. Lithium-ion batteries do wear out over time. That’s why it’s important to take good care of the battery from the moment you buy an iPhone.
Maintaining your iPhone battery is quite easy; there are simply a few things to keep in mind. You can also use your phone as you normally do. OMT editor Sabine explains how to keep your iPhone’s battery healthy (for now).
iPhone battery: how to maintain it
The lithium-ion batteries used in smartphones today simply wear out. That process is simply unstoppable. Through the behavior of the user and the software of the phone, the life of a battery can be extended slightly. When you buy your iPhone, it has a battery capacity of one hundred percent, but after about five hundred full charges (from zero to one hundred percent), the battery should still retain eighty percent of its original capacity, according to Apple.
How quickly your battery deteriorates depends on how much you use the iPhone. An average user will last longer with the same battery than high consumers. The latter group charges the device a lot more often because the device also runs out faster due to the higher use. To prevent the iPhone from turning itself off when the battery reaches less than eighty percent of its original capacity, a security mechanism is enabled.

#1 Charge all night
It won’t hurt the battery to leave your iPhone on the charger all night. Your iPhone knows based on your sleep rhythm when you need it again, and based on that determines how quickly the battery is charged. The device will therefore not be charged to one hundred percent overnight, but only just before you get up in the morning. Charging with your Apple Watch at the same time is also no problem.
#2 Temperature
Maybe you like to stroll on the beach with 30+ degrees, but your smartphone battery won’t make you happy at all. Whether your iPhone is off or not, batteries just can’t handle those tropical weather conditions very well. In this way, the battery loses usable capacity once and for all. The battery can also expand at high temperatures. Because charging itself also generates heat, it is certainly not smart to charge your phone in full sun. Always make sure that the heat from your iPhone can escape.

#3 Put iPhone away while charging
As you just read, your battery is not a fan of high temperatures and your device often gets warm while charging. If you also use your device while it is on the charger, your iPhone will become even warmer. All that heat together is not so good for your battery and causes extra wear and tear. Therefore, simply put your iPhone away while it is charging. Use a fast charger if you are impatient.
#4 Store with a half-dead battery
If you have a new iPhone and want to sell your old iPhone, the device may be in a drawer for a while. Make sure that the battery is not completely full, but also not completely empty. Apple itself says that a charge percentage of around fifty percent is ideal, but anything between twenty and eighty percent is fine. Then turn off your old iPhone so that the battery does not run out immediately and store the device in a place where it is neither too hot nor too cold. Do you plan not to use your iPhone for more than six months? Then charge it again and again in the above manner.
