The dating app Tinder has filed a complaint against Google in our country. The ACM is starting a preliminary investigation into possible abuse of power around Google’s payment system that is mandatory for use in the Play Store. Apple has also been reprimanded earlier.

ACM investigation Google

The Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) has started a preliminary investigation after it was approached by the Match Group, the parent company of Tinder. The knows that NOS† There are two ways in which Google would abuse its power in the Play Store: dating apps are currently not allowed to use their own payment system, nor can they link to other payment systems.

In other words, if you take out a subscription to Tinder, that payment will expire in the Play Store, so that Google will collect a commission of up to 30 percent of the purchase amount. This previously led to dissatisfaction with developers who offer apps in the Play Store.

Simple agreement?

Google isn’t alone in being criticized either, as Apple has a similar policy in its App Store. Earlier, the Match Group had already taken a blow against Apple after it lodged a complaint with the ACM for the same reason. Apple must therefore build in an exception in the Netherlands so that specific dating apps in the Netherlands can apply their own payment system. ACM has imposed a total of 50 million euros in penalty payments on Apple.

At Google, meanwhile, a new wind seems to be blowing regarding its Play Store policy and payment system. The company has plans to allow developers to offer their own payment solution under certain conditions. Google is currently testing such a system in collaboration with Spotify.

It is therefore possible that the parent company of Tinder will reach an agreement with Google relatively easily. Much more difficult is the case between Google and the European Commission, which is now on appeal. Google faces a fine of 1.49 billion euros.
