Activate Apple Intelligence on iPhone, iPad and Mac; now also in the Netherlands, Belgium and EU

From now on you can finally use Apple Intelligence on an iPhone or iPad without a detour in the European Union. On a Mac this was possible since macOS 15.1. Through Digital Markets ACT law, Apple had decided to block Apple Intelligence in the EU.

Apple Intelligence is Apple’s AI system that makes your iPhone, iPad and Mac smarter and more personal by using generative models and your personal context. It performs tasks such as summarizing notifications, improving texts, and creating images, while your privacy is protected because many processes take place locally on your device or are performed via secure private cloud compute.

Apple Intelligence in the EU

Do you want to use Apple Intelligence on your iPhone, iPad or Mac? Then it is best to update this to iOS 18.4, iPados 18.4 or macOS 15.4. Do you have an Apple Vision Pro? Then you can start from Visionos 2.4. From these software updates you can activate Apple’s generative artificial intelligence on your device without activating a detour.

Unfortunately, Apple Intelligence is not yet working in Dutch. If you want to use the function, the language of the Device and of Siri on Engels (Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, VK, US, South Africa) must be set. Extra features and support for Chinese (simplified), German, English (India, Singapore), French, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazil) and Spanish are available at the beginning of April. Other languages ​​are also added during the course of the year, including Vietnamese. Some features may not be available in all languages ​​or regions.

Supporting devices

In our Apple Intelligence FAQ you can check which devices support Apple Intelligence. For the iPhone these are the iPhone 15 Pro (Max) and all iPhone 16 models. An iPad requires an M-chip or A17 Pro processor and a Mac must be equipped with an M1 chip or newer. Make sure you have iOS 18.4, iPados 18.4, macOS 15.4 or newer installed to use the service in the function.

Adjust settings

As soon as the latest software is installed on a supporting device you can try to activate Apple Intelligence. For this you have to adjust the following settings.

  • Open settings on your iPhone or iPad, open system settings on your Mac
  • Go to ‘General’
  • Select ‘Language and Region’
  • Tap or click ‘Add Language’ (Plus button)
  • Choose ‘English (US)’
  • Remove Dutch or place at least English US at the top

  • Then open (System) Settings on your iPhone, iPad or Mac
  • Go to Apple Intelligence & Siri
  • Tap ‘Language’ at ‘Siri Requests’
  • Choose ‘English (United States)

It is advisable to use English US. Of course you can also choose another language that supports Apple Intelligence, but keep in mind that some features may not be available in all languages ​​or regions.

In principle, Apple Intelligence is automatically activated on your device once you have completed the above steps. If this is not the case, you can enable it using the procedure below.

  • Open Settings on your iPhone, iPad or Mac
  • Go to Apple Intelligence & Siri
  • Call in ‘Apple Intelligence’
  • Follow the steps on the screen

It is normal for you to have to wait a while before all Apple Intelligence functions such as Image Playground Genmoji, Writing Aid, etc. Your iPhone, iPad or Mac must download the models and apps and save locally on your device. This requires the necessary time. It is best to hang your device on the charger after activating and to have the generative models download and install in the background.
