The Apple Watch Series 7 screen is a bit bigger than its predecessors, which was the reason for Apple to introduce a full keyboard. This allows you to type messages and passwords on your Apple Watch without too much effort. But unfortunately, the on-screen keyboard does not work in Dutch.
The Apple Watch keyboard can only be used in English or Simplified Chinese. So if you want to reply to a message in Dutch, you can only use dictation, a standard reply or emoji. With a trick you can activate the Apple Watch keyboard, but it is pretty much unusable. Fortunately, there is an alternative.
Apple Watch Keyboard Limitations
The Apple Watch keyboard can only be used in English or Simplified Chinese. So if you want to use the keyboard, you will first need to add the English keyboard to your Apple Watch. After that, you can use the keyboard, but this will have some limitations.
The keyboard makes suggestions as soon as you start typing and in most cases automatically completes the words for you. This makes it almost impossible to use Apple’s on-screen keyboard in Dutch. At the bottom of this article we have an alternative that you can use in Dutch.
Activate English keyboard on Apple Watch
If you still want to use the English keyboard on your Apple Watch, with or without Dutch, you can follow the steps below to activate the keyboard.
- Open the Apple Watch on your iPhone
- Navigate to General ▸ Language and region
- Select ‘Custom’
- Tap ‘Add language’
- Select the language ‘English (US)’
- Tap Done
- In the pop-up window, select ‘Keep Dutch’
- Now restart your Apple Watch
Using the Apple Watch Keyboard
Once you have activated the English language, you can use the keyboard on the Series 7 in all applications where you can enter text. Think of Messages, Mail, App Store, etc. When you have to enter text, in most cases the dictation function is activated, you can then swipe the screen up for extra options. Then choose the keyboard. Then you can tap keys to form a word or use swipe gestures.
Alternative: WirstBoard
Developer Adam Foot has he had it for a while ‘WirstBoard‘ in the App Store. This app allows you to use a Dutch keyboard on your Apple Watch to type messages, even if you don’t have a Series 7. The app is primarily intended for the Messages app, but in combination with WirstChat you can also use it for WhatsApp messages.
WirstBoard is easy to use and works almost the same as the standard keyboard. In fact, Apple’s keyboard looks exactly like WirstBoard, which has had its current design since 2020. WirstBoard also has some limitations, for example, you can only use the keyboard from within the app to type text for new Messages via the Messages app.
