Do you use multiple smart devices in your home for iPhone, iPad and Mac? Then it is best to group these and use rooms for HomeKit and Matter.
By grouping devices in rooms in the Home app, you can easily control them individually or per room, for example turning off all the lights in the living room with one Siri command. This provides an overview and makes automating, combining or calling scenes per room quick and clear, which is especially useful if you have many different devices.
Rooms in Apple Home
Using rooms in the Home app is especially useful if you have multiple smart home devices, because it provides overview and efficiency. Due to Matter’s broader support, there are more and more smart devices that can use the Home app. By using rooms you maintain an overview.
Add rooms to Property
- Open the Home app
- Go to the ‘Property’ tab
- Tap click the plus button
- Choose ‘Add room’
- Give the room a unique name
- Choose a background if necessary
- Save the new room

Add devices to HomeKit rooms
Place your finger on the accessory in the Home app or secondary-click (right-click) on a Mac. Choose ‘Accessory settings’ and tap or click on ‘Room’. Then select the desired room.
Change or delete HomeKit rooms
If you want to change a room in the Home app afterwards, you can easily do this.
- Open the Home app
- Go to the ‘Property’ tab
- Tap or click on the room in the overview
- Then click or tap on the three dots
- Select ‘Room settings’
- Adjust the desired data
- Select ‘Delete room’ to delete it

Manage room order
Open the ‘Home’ tab in the application of the same name on your iPhone, iPad or Mac. Then tap or click the three dots and choose ‘Change order of sections’. Drag the rooms to the desired location. Do you open a room in the overview and then the dot menu? Then you can change the room view.
