Add text effects to text in the Message app

In addition to standard layout such as fat,, ” italicUnderline and cross out, you can also add animated effects to letters, words, sentences and emoji in the Message app.

A nice way to cheer up your messages and to give certain text more attention in the message. A condition for the use of the text effects is that macOS Sequoia, iPados 18 or iOS 18 or newer is present on your device. In older versions you only have access to the standard layout options.

Add text effects to a message

The special effects are available on iPhone, iPad and Mac. You can choose from different text effects: large, small, shaking, nodding, explosion, ripple, blossom and vibration.

Go through the steps below to use text effects. The function works slightly different under iOS than under macOS.

  • Open a conversation with another Message app user in the Message app on your iPhone, iPad or Mac. The text effects cannot be used in an SMS message.
  • When typing, select the text that you want to provide with a text effect
  • Tap the keyboard on the A with three lines at the top. This is only visible if you send a message to another iMessage user. On a Mac you use the right mouse button.
  • Choose the effect that you want to add to the selected text.
  • Repeat this for all the text you want to provide an effect.
  • Tap the send button to send the message with the effects

Adding the text effects works in a different way on a Mac. Mark the text in a conversation and click on the selected text with a secondary click (right mouse button). In the context menu that appears, then choose ‘Text effects’. Select an effect from the list and add it, repeat this for all the text you want to provide with an effect and then send your message.
