Adding debit card to Google Wallet on smartwatches works again

For quite some time, it was not possible to use a debit card via Google Wallet on smartwatches. That problem now seems to have been resolved.

Google Wallet on smartwatches

In a number of countries, including the Netherlands and Belgium, the Google Pay app on phones and Wear OS watches was recently replaced by the Google Wallet app. You can store your credit cards, loyalty cards, and digital IDs in Wallet, among other things. Unfortunately, smartwatch owners were presented with an error when adding a payment card to Wallet. Payment via the smart watch was therefore not possible, not even for the new Galaxy Watch 5 series. On the Play page from Google Wallet and on a forum from Samsung Complaints flooded in from people who, for example, had bought a smartwatch to be able to pay with it and were then unable to do so (anymore).

Our tipster Han Perier informed us about this and announced today that adding a debit card via Google Wallet on his Galaxy Watch 5 Pro worked: “Wallet works! Via update on your watch, so not in the playstore mobile but via my apps on watch updated and ready!” Adding now also works on the Galaxy Watch 5 at the editorial office, and therefore payment via the Samsung smartwatch is possible again.

Can you also add a debit card to Wallet on your smartwatch? We are curious on which watch you have to deal with. Let us know in the comments to this article.

Everything about Google Wallet

The Google Pay app is now the Google Wallet app. If you already have the Google Pay app on your phone, you don’t need to download a new app. You will be prompted to update the app in the Play Store the next time you open the Google Pay app. After the update, the app will appear as Google Wallet.

You can then store and use your debit cards, credit cards, loyalty cards, digital tickets, digital IDs (driver’s license), concert tickets, digital car keys and train tickets in Google Wallet. You can read how to do that in this article.
