Subtitles are basically a text file that contains time codes. These timestamps indicate when a line of text appears and when it disappears.

Three display modes

Forta has all the functions to correct subtitles or create completely new subtitles. The program supports all popular subtitle formats such as sub, srt, ass and ssa. You can even filter embedded subtitles from Matroska video files (mkv). Editing is done in one of three window modes. For that you go in the menu Adjustments nasty basic† translator or 3rd view† You can also activate those modes with an F-key.

Watch video

If you want to correct the synchronization of subtitles, you must of course also be able to see the video images. This only works if you also install a codec package. Everything worked well for us because of the Install K-lite Mega Code Pack and then restart Forta. It is possible to set the timing of a line to the nearest thousandth of a second to ensure that the text is perfectly synchronized with the corresponding frame.

In translation mode, you can go through line by line to manually translate the text. The third mode is similar to the translation mode, but is actually best suited for correcting other people’s subtitles.

You can see when and for how long a subtitle appears.

Find and replace

To make it easy for you, you have advanced search options that help you quickly find certain lines of text and replace certain words that have been translated incorrectly, for example. It is also possible to split a subtitle so that the second part can be seen on a different frame. The reverse, merging two lines of text into one subtitle, is also possible.

Conclusion

Once you have mastered the software, it is actually a nice program to create, translate or adjust subtitles. It’s extra fun when you preview a movie while making changes.
