Making sage candies yourself is not difficult and they help against coughs. We’ll show you which ingredients you need and how you can best prepare them.

You don’t necessarily have to buy sage candy; you can easily make them at home. All you need are four simple ingredients and half an hour.

Important: Buy the ingredients for your candies in organic quality. Not only will your body thank you for this, but also the environment: Organic farms are ecologically sustainable in their cultivation and production and, for example, do not use any synthetic chemical pesticides. Especially with honey if you should also pay attention to regional origin, you will support local beekeepers in maintaining biodiversity and avoid long transport routes.

Since the sage candies contain honey, they are not vegan. However, you can replace the honey with a honey substitute or use agave syrup. You can find more alternatives here: Honey vegan: the 6 best plant-based alternatives.

Homemade sage candies

  • Preparation: about 20 minutes
  • Quantity: 20 piece

Ingredients:

  • 1 handful

    fresh sage leaves

  • 100 g

    white or brown sugar

  • 1 tbsp

    honey

  • 1 tbsp

    Lemon juice

  • Icing sugar for rolling

preparation

  1. Wash and brush the sage first. Then chop the leaves as finely as possible.

  2. Put the sugar in a saucepan with about two tablespoons of water and heat it over low to medium heat. The sugar will now slowly become liquid. Swirl the pot back and forth frequently so that nothing burns. Alternatively, you can stir gently with a wooden spoon. But be careful that the mass doesn’t stick to it.

  3. When the sugar is runny and starting to turn brown, take the pan off the stove. The sugar must never burn or get too hot, otherwise it will taste bitter.

  4. Add the honey and lemon juice to the saucepan and stir all the ingredients to a homogeneous mass. Then add the chopped sage leaves.

  5. Now spread parchment paper (or a sustainable parchment paper substitute) on a baking sheet. Use a spoon to drip the liquid mass on the desired candy size.

  6. Let the sage candy cool down and harden. If you want, you can roll them before they harden completely. Just check every now and then whether the crowd is ready for it. You can tell by the fact that it no longer pulls strings when you touch it with your finger. Then just take the sage candy between your fingers and roll it back and forth a few times. Then let it harden completely.

  7. Roll the sage candies in some powdered sugar to prevent them from sticking together.
