Albert Heijn provides more background information about its products with the AH Productscanner app. With the help of augmented reality, the app shows the origin of a piece of salmon fillet.
AH Product Scanner now available
According to the supermarket chain, customers still have many questions about the ingredients of a product and what you can make with it. However, all this information does not fit on the packaging, so Albert Heijn takes a different approach.
The supermarket provides the answers to these kinds of questions today in the form of the AH Self-Scanner app for your iPhone. By using the app to point your camera lens at a product, the app provides all kinds of useful and interesting information.

In this way you will learn more about ingredients, nutritional values, accompanying recipes and the origin of a product. For the time being, the app only works on messages from AH’s own brand, and only with 35 products. These are now all from the meat, fish, chicken and meat products category. Supported articles can be recognized by a special sticker that refers to the AH Product Scanner.
With augmented reality, in the case of the salmon, for example, you see a river appear on your screen, where a salmon jumps upwards. This does not work perfectly in all cases, but if you hold the iPhone correctly and not too far away, it does. The supermarket promises to further expand the number of products in the coming period, so that eventually all Albert Heijn’s own brand products will be processed in the app in this way.
The rise of augmented reality
Albert Heijn is by no means the only company that is interested in the possibilities of augmented reality. Numerous AR apps will appear this fall with the arrival of ARKit. This software platform from Apple has already delivered many impressive demos.
