AirPods 4th generation: All rumors at a glance

The AirPods 4th generation are expected before the end of 2024, but unfortunately when exactly is still unknown. It has already become clear which new functions we can expect.

For example, the fourth generation will have a charging case with USB-C, the volume on the AirPods themselves can be adjusted, the H2 headphone chip will be added, support for Bluetooth 5.3 and improved battery life. There is even active noise cancellation. We list all the rumors for you.

AirPods 4th generation

The current AirPods were unveiled in the fall of 2021 and it is likely that Apple will launch a new generation before the end of 2024. The AirPods 4 will mainly receive innovations that Apple has already added to the AirPods Pro.

H2 headphone chip

The AirPods currently use the first generation H-chip. Just like the AirPods Pro, Apple will probably also add the H2 chip to the AirPods 4. It is faster, more energy efficient and can perform certain audio options better. Thanks to the new processor, the music sounds better thanks to more powerful bass and less distortion.

Longer battery life

The battery life of the AirPods will improve significantly, which is partly due to the H2 chip. Current generation AirPods now have up to 6 hours of listening time on a single full charge (up to 5 hours with spatial audio enabled). This may increase by an hour.

Active noise cancellation (new)

There are rumors reporting that Apple plans to add active noise cancellation to the ‘standard’ AirPods. Active noise cancellation is an advanced technology that detects external sounds and then generates anti-phase sounds to neutralize them, creating a more quiet listening environment. This process helps to effectively reduce unwanted sounds, such as background noise in airplanes or busy city environments, and improve the listening experience.

The AirPods Pro also have noise cancellation, both active (software) and passive (silicone eartips). The AirPods 4 will probably not have eartips and will only produce anti-noise through software.

Familiar design

The AirPods 4th generation probably look exactly like its predecessor. The white ears are equipped with short bars with a pressure sensor that you can probably also operate with swipe movements. Just like on the AirPods Pro 2, you can control all playback functions on the stem with touch controls. To adjust the volume, swipe up or down.

Improved charging case

The charging case will probably be renewed with, among other things, a mounting eye and speaker. This is not intended for music, but to be able to play a sound when they are lost. You can then play a sound on the case via the Find My app, so that you can find it more easily. You can charge the case via the new USB-C port, using MagSafe or an Apple Watch charger.

Bluetooth 5.3

Apple will probably provide the new AirPods 4 with Bluetooth 5.3. This makes the wireless connection more stable and there is less delay. Useful for automatically switching, pairing or starting music. In addition, Bluetooth 5.3 energy sucks, which means that the AirPods’ battery lasts longer.

AirPods Lite

Previously, rumors also appeared about cheaper AirPods, possibly an updated version of the AirPods 2nd generation. You could then compare this with the SE series of the iPhone and Apple Watch. Breathing new life into an old model by updating the specifications.

The AirPods Lite, or AirPods SE, will most likely have the same design as the AirPods 2nd generation, but with a USB-C charging case, no Adaptive EQ, no spatial audio and they are not sweat and water resistant. The processor may be updated to H2 so that the battery life lasts longer.

Availability of AirPods 4th generation

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman Apple suppliers will start production of the new fourth-generation AirPods model in May. Based on this production time frame, he expects the earphones to be released in September or October.
