Although Apple has not shared any official figures, we can conclude that the AirTag is a success. The smart tracker is frequently linked to items, so that you can determine its location. Apple has unveiled the second generation of AirTag. Thanks to a longer Bluetooth range, 50% louder speaker and improved Accurate Search, you can find objects up to 50% further and hear up to twice as far.
In addition, for the first time, you can now find your AirTag using Precise Search on Apple Watch Series 9 or later and Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later – right from your wrist.
AirTag 2nd generation
The AirTag 2nd generation retains the same round design and compact coin shape as the original model, maintaining its recognizable appearance and ease of carrying. The casing hardly changes, but Apple has improved the internal hardware with, among other things, a more powerful speaker and a new Ultra Wideband chip for better location determination, without affecting the appearance.

This means that the AirTag 2 looks familiar in design and easily hangs on a key ring, for example, while the technical upgrades ensure more reliable operation and better security against unwanted tracking without this being visible in appearance.
Improved location tracking thanks to U2
Locating the AirTag second generation is significantly more accurate than its previous generation. The new AirTag will have the U2 chip, which was currently first found in the iPhone 15 (Pro) and the Apple Watch from 2023 or newer. The biggest difference is the ultrawideband range: the U2 works up to 60 meters, while the U1 only offers 10 meters accuracy. This makes it much easier to find the AirTag when you are near the device. For the first time, you can now find AirTag using Precise Search on Apple Watch Series 9 or later and Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later – right from your wrist.
Better findability with sound signal
Thanks to the updated internal design, the new AirTag is 50% louder than the previous generation, so you can hear AirTag from up to 2x as far away. Improved Precise Search features and a distinctive new sound help you find important items even more easily – such as keys that have disappeared between the couch cushions or a wallet that is lying around somewhere.
Other innovations
- It has become more difficult to remove the speakers from the AirTag
- Improved privacy measures
- Additional notification for extreme and low battery levels
