Most Nokia phones have been withdrawn from sale in Germany and Switzerland. It concerns all Nokia phones that HMD Global released in 2021 and older devices. The cause is a patent issue that the company lost in a lawsuit.
Nokia in Germany
The Finnish company HMD Global has run into problems in the German and Swiss markets. Only the new Nokia G21 and G11 are still for sale after all older models, including the 2021 devices, have disappeared from the HMD Global web shop, you know that computer picture† They are currently still for sale through certain retailers.
HMD Global has to discontinue sales after losing a lawsuit with company VoiceAgeEVS (VAEVS). That company owns patents related to calls called ‘Enhanced Voice Service’ and in several countries HMD has been sued by UAEVS for an infringement of these patents. VAEVS has now paid a bail, which means that the ruling on the patent infringements has taken effect immediately.
Earlier, more smartphone brands such as Apple, TCL and Lenovo were taken to court by VAEVS for the same issue, but then a mutual agreement was reached each time. HMD appears to be pursuing a different strategy and has already indicated that it will appeal the rulings, but in the meantime, Nokia phones from 2021 or older will no longer be for sale in Germany and Switzerland.
