Android 12 (Go edition) is official. In a message Google announces the successor to their simplified version of Android. Compared to Android 11 Go, smartphones with Android 12 Go should be more economical, feel faster and start up faster. What exactly is Android Go and what else has been improved?
What is Android Go?
Every version update of Android comes with adjustments and improvements, but also gets bigger and ‘heavier’. Smartphone hardware generally needs to be more powerful to run Android properly. However, the real budget smartphones often have hardware that is not powerful enough to run Android properly and smoothly. For these smartphones, Google introduced Android Go in 2017, an operating system specially made for cheap and ‘low spec’ smartphones.
In fact, Android Go is a stripped-down version of Android for the real budget smartphone of around a hundred euros. It should enable these smartphones and their users to make good use of the Android operating system, despite the less fast hardware. According to Google, this operating system was launched at the time with the aim of giving more people access to Android.
Faster, smoother and better battery performance
According to Google, Android 12 Go should mainly be a lot faster and smoother to use than Android 11 Go. For example, apps should work up to thirty percent faster and start up a lot faster. With Android 11 Go you sometimes had to wait for seconds for an app to work, this should no longer happen with Android 12 Go.

Battery performance should also be improved. Android 12 Go automatically saves battery life. The operating system does this by putting unused apps that are still active in the background into a sleep mode. This also has a positive effect on the working memory, which makes it less likely to be affected. This in turn ensures that your smartphone should continue to work smoothly.
Privacy and when to see it?
Finally, Android 12 Go, like the ‘normal’ Android 12, should offer more transparency and options when it comes to privacy. For example, Android 12 Go will have its own privacy dashboard. Here you can see, among other things, which apps have access to certain parts or folders of your phone. This includes access to your contacts, photos, media and/or location.

Google indicates that the first smartphones with Android 12 Go will be announced in early 2022. Brands such as Nokia and TCL have already released smartphones with a Go version of Android. We expect them to do that again next year.
