Android 13 on PCs: This Interface Google Built

Google has given Android 13 a custom interface for when the software runs on PCs. In addition to a taskbar with apps, there are buttons with which you can quickly navigate to your notifications or settings. Apps also open in a window, but there are also limitations.

Android 13 for PCs

Android is not a popular operating system for PCs and laptops at the moment. You can use Android apps on Chromebooks and the interface of Chrome OS is fully geared to desktop. Nevertheless, with Android 13, Google has made its mobile operating systems more suitable for PCs.

The improvements have been noticed by Esper and are part of the second developer preview of Android 13. On desktop, Android 13 will now have a taskbar where your most important apps appear. There is also an app drawer that allows you to view all your apps in one go. The latter addition will also work on Android tablets.

Apps in windows

Furthermore, Google also comes with buttons on the taskbar with which you can open the settings or your notifications in one fell swoop. We have not seen these improvements before in Android 13 on Android 12L for tablets. When you open an app on PC, it also happens automatically in a window. Only it is not yet possible to open multiple apps in multi-screen side by side on the screen. This is only possible via a setting from the developer settings.

It is also striking that the status bar at the top with notification icons and the clock is also preserved on PCs. The screenshot below of the desktop interface was taken on a Pixel phone. The only device that Android 13 works on for now.

Desktop mode?

Now that the Android 13 interface for PCs has been leaked, we’re left with some questions. First of all, whether Google will finally propose a full-fledged desktop mode for Android, an alternative to software such as Samsung DeX or Ready For from Motorola. We know that Google has been working on such a function for some time, but we would like to see them appear with the interface improvements in Android 13. And finally, the question is whether the buttons on the taskbar will also be available on tablets.

What do you think of the Android 13 interface for desktops? Do you think that Android will really be used as a PC in the future instead of Chrome OS? Are you hoping that there will finally be a desktop mode for Android? Let us know in the comments at the bottom of this article.
