Google is testing a system where users can pay in apps without using Google’s own Play Store payment system. In this way, developers no longer have to hand over part of the revenue from in-app purchases to Google.
Pay outside the Play Store
It has cost Google criticism, dissatisfaction with developers and also lawsuits, but now the company allows app developers to build their own payment system in their Android apps. Spotify users will soon have the choice to pay with Google’s payment method from the Play Store or with their own system, Google has in a blog post announced.
It may matter much less to the users of apps which service they pay through now: as long as it is safe and user-friendly. Still, it does make a difference for app and game developers. For every purchase made by a user via Google’s Play Store payment system, they must pay Google a commission of 15 to 30 percent of the amount. It is no coincidence that its share was lowered by Google†
“Milestone”
What is more important than the test with Spotify is that Google also stated in so many words in the blog post that it also wants to roll out third-party payment methods more widely in its application store in the long run. At the same time, it also becomes clear that Google sets conditions. The alternative payment system must be as secure as Play Store payments and it seems that developers are not allowed to offer their own payment method exclusively in apps. It is not known what other conditions Google sets.
“This is an important milestone and the first time this has happened in a major application store, be it mobile on desktop or on game consoles,” said Sameer Samat, vice president of product management at Google. It is not known when the system will be rolled out more widely, but the company says it will announce more in the coming months. So it’s very plausible that the tech giant will reveal more about it during its Google I/O developer conference that takes place every May.
