Do you regularly use the Wallet on your iPhone? Then you may soon get a useful function, because Apple is working on a digital car key for several brands. With Apple Car Key it is possible to add a car key to your Wallet. You can then open and close your car via your iPhone. Both Bluetooth and the NFC chip in the device are used for this, which is the same processor that is needed for Apple Pay.
With the Apple Car Key it is not only possible to open or lock the car, you can also start the car with the function. Apple introduced the feature in 2022. The digital car key is now available for various brands, including Ford, BMW, BYD, Hyundai, Kia and Mercedes-Benz. More car brands will soon be added, because new codes have appeared in the Wallet app.
These car brands receive Car Key
Apple has adjusted a number of codes in the Wallet app, indicating that more cars will soon have support for Car Key. This concerns cars from the brands Volvo, Polestar and Audi. These car brands already have several cars with support for Car Key, but more models will be added soon. It is not yet known exactly which cars are involved.
Which functions are linked to Apple Car Key depends on the car brand. To use the digital car key you need an iPhone XS or newer. Linking is then done via the car manufacturer’s app, email or text message. It contains the step-by-step plan to add the Car Key. You will then be automatically redirected to the Wallet app on your iPhone, where you add the digital key.
Car key on the Apple Watch
Do you have an Apple Watch Series 5 or newer? Then the Apple Car Key may also be automatically added to the smartwatch. With the function enabled, the car lock will automatically disengage or engage when you are nearby. You can also unlock or lock the car from a distance. To do this, go to your Wallet and tap the car key. There you will see an overview of all options, depending on the car.
To operate the Apple Car Key remotely, you need an iPhone 11 or newer. For the Apple Watch, this is the Apple Watch Series 6 or newer. This function is especially useful if you want to grant someone access to your car, or if you are unsure whether you have locked the car. It is not yet known when Apple will roll out the digital car key for the new cars from Volvo, Polestar and Audi.
