During the Spring Loaded event, Apple announced a new paid podcast service. The service offers access to exclusive podcasts for a fixed monthly fee. Paid podcasts should already be available, but have now turned out to be delayed to June.
Paid podcasts not available until June
Apple’s new paid podcast service has been delayed to June. The iPhone maker promised to roll out the feature with the arrival of iOS 14.6, but it didn’t. Creators were already able to sign up for the paid podcast service, but still cannot use it.
Apple has now informed podcast makers of the postponement. In the message, Apple states that it ‘wants to offer the best user experience to makers and listeners’. Apparently that is not yet possible. Apple promises to update podcast makers about availability in the coming weeks.
More about Apple’s paid podcast service
Apple’s new podcast service gives subscribers access to exclusive content for a fixed amount per month. The podcast service will have a permanent place in the Podcasts app, which is installed by default on all Apple devices. After logging in with your Apple ID you can take out a subscription, after which you will have access to the full range.
Apple gives makers a chance to make more money through the new service. However, paid podcasts only work for people who listen through Apple’s Podcasts app. The exclusive content cannot therefore be offered via other apps such as Spotify.
The new podcast service comes as no surprise. Apple has been building paid services for years, such as Apple TV Plus, Apple Arcade, and Apple Music. The exact day paid podcasts will become available is not known at the time of writing.
