Apple is two years behind in AI – according to Apple itself
In the most recent newsletter from Apple expert Mark Gurman, you can read that some Apple employees believe that the company is two years behind in the development of AI. But why?
Apple already presented the AI functions for the first time during WWDC24 in June. This was the company’s first step into the world of AI. Apple AI brings quite a few interesting features to the iPhone, such as an improved Siri, Genmoji with which you can make your own emojis and your iPhone can automatically create summaries of notifications and emails.
Apple’s AI mainly uses models that run on the iPhone itself. But that does mean that the system requirements are quite demanding. You need an A17 chip or better for it. You will find this in the iPhone from the iPhone 15 Pro (Max) and in the iPad mini 7 (2024). In addition, your device must have 8GB of RAM. But because Apple Intelligence runs on your iPhone, there’s also a limit to the amount of information it can hold.
For that reason, Apple has started a collaboration with OpenAI. This gives the iPhone support for (hugely popular) ChatGPT. The great thing is that you don’t necessarily have to use ChatGPT. But if you want to, you have this option.
According to Mark Gurman, Apple research has shown that ChatGPT is about 25 percent more accurate than Siri. In addition, the smart chatbot can answer about 30 percent more questions. He then says that “some Apple employees believe AI is more than two years behind its largest competitors.”
However, that does not have to be so bad. In the past, Apple has also caught up with other apps where they were lagging behind. For example, consider Apple Maps, which has now improved considerably. Gurman also thinks that Apple can still catch up with the competition in the AI field in the future.
In addition, Gurman said that by 2026, every Apple device with a screen will support Apple Intelligence. The only question remains when we can get started with this in the EU. Because until that moment arrives, Apple will certainly still lag behind the competition with their AI.
