Apple no longer gives iPhone SE the most powerful chip

Until now, you didn’t have to buy the most expensive iPhone to get the most powerful processor. For example, the iPhone SE 2022 and iPhone 13 (mini) have the same chip as the much more expensive iPhone 13 Pro. That now seems to be changing.

Not all iPhones get the latest Apple chip

Earlier this year, trusted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported that Apple is keeping the new A16 Bionic chip exclusive to the iPhone 14 Pro (Max). The regular iPhone 14 models have to make do with last year’s A15 chip, which the iPhone 13 series already has.

It is now becoming clear that this is not due to chip shortages, but that Apple is changing its strategy. In a new report, Kuo states that all entry-level and mid range iPhone models in the future will no longer have the latest chips from Apple.

With the entry-level iPhone, Kuo is referring to the iPhone SE; the cheapest phone from apple. The mid range iPhones are the cheaper variants of the Pro iPhones that appear every year. In 2021 these were the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini. This year, the new iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max are among the mid range iPhones from Apple. They will probably be announced in September.

iPhone 13 A15 difference

Due to the future iPhone SE and the mid range By giving iPhones an older processor, Apple hopes to make the more expensive Pro models more popular with consumers. Now it is the case that the regular iPhone models and the Pro iPhones are not inferior to each other. They look the same, are equally powerful and both take stunning photos – although the Pro’s camera system is slightly more extensive.

iPhone 14 Pro

With the new iPhone 14 series, Apple seems to be doing everything it can to send people to the more expensive Pro models. As mentioned, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max get a faster chip, but Apple is doing more to make the differences bigger.

For example, when it comes to design. With the Pro iPhones, the notch at the top of the screen disappears. It will be replaced by two small cutouts in the screen, where Apple hides the selfie camera and Face ID technology. With the ‘regular’ iPhone 14, the design will probably remain almost the same as with the iPhone 13.

In addition, Apple provides the iPhone 14 Pro (Max) with an impressive 48-megapixel camera. It is the first time that the iPhone shoots photos in such a high resolution. The cheaper iPhone 14 (Max) still has to make do with 12 megapixel lenses.
