It’s been a few years since the Apple Pencil 2 came out. But according to several patents, Apple is already working on the successor. The Apple Pencil 3 promises to be a major update (and upgrade!) and iPhoned explains why!
Apple Pencil 3: this is what you can expect (according to patents)
Apple recently landed a slew of patents. This also included two new patents for the Apple Pencil. According to this information, the Apple Pencil 3 is going to be a really cool update.
1. More touch functions
The first patent describes that Apple plans to give the Apple Pencil 3 more touch functions. The current Apple Pencil 2 has a ‘touch surface’ that you can tap to perform a function. The patent states that Apple will add more functions and make the touch-sensitive surface a bit larger.
Then you can not only tap, but also hang a function on a pinch. In addition, it should also be possible to add even more functions with a swipe over the pen.
2. Hauptic feedback
Another interesting addition is hauptic feedback. You may already know that from your iPhone. For example, when you briefly press and hold your finger on an app icon, you will feel a short vibration.
If the Apple Pencil 3 also gets this feature, it will open the doors to some nice features. For example, what do you think you feel when you no longer color within the lines with a drawing program? Or that Apple Pencil can let you know when the battery is almost empty by vibrating? Super handy features we’d love to have!
Apple Pencil 3 release
Unfortunately, it is not yet known when the Apple Pencil 3 will come. The first Apple Pencil appeared in November of 2015. The second generation came out in November 2018. Actually, Apple is already a bit behind with the introduction of a new Apple Pencil.
Still, we’re not giving up hope and there may be another Apple Pencil 3 with these new features sometime in the next few years. The features included in the patents are described would at least give the Apple Pencil a cool update. And secretly we hope that Apple will immediately give the Pencil a few nice colors!
