Apple refreshes iPhone lock screen with iOS 16

Apple refreshes iPhone lock screen with iOS 16

The iPhone lock screen is being overhauled by Apple with the arrival of iOS 16. This allows you to personalize your lock screen even further. The latest version of the iPhone’s operating system was announced Monday at the WWDC developer conference.

In iOS 16 it will be possible to change the font and color of the clock. You can also add widgets to the lock screen, giving you an immediate overview of all appointments in your agenda, the outside temperature or your recent sports activities. By holding down certain elements on the screen you can move them as you wish.

It is even possible to create multiple access screens, which you can switch between. This is especially useful in conjunction with the Focus feature in iOS. If you are at work, you can choose one lock screen, where specific notifications are disabled, while in your spare time you can choose another lock screen to receive the notifications.

Apple has chosen to show notifications at the bottom of the screen, which looks a lot more streamlined. Also interesting is the option to follow live activities. So you no longer have to unlock your phone to see the current status of a football match or where your Uber taxi is.

You can set the lock screen in iOS 16 according to your wishes.

Messaging app

Apple is also addressing the Messages app in iOS 16. The option to edit messages after you have sent them is handy. Still regret your message? Then you can even retract the message. This function is not very revolutionary, by the way. This has been possible for some time in WhatsApp.

The Messages app will soon also support the SharePlay feature. This allows you to watch your favorite shows or listen to music with friends or family. Now SharePlay is only available in FaceTime.

The Voice Memos will also receive a minor update, making it easier to type out texts based on recorded messages. For example, you can choose to use the keyboard while you are talking. You no longer have to look for emoticons, since the voice command ‘smiley face’ is already enough to get the relevant emoticon in the message.

Apple Pay Later

Apple is also expanding the capabilities of Apple Pay. For example, Apple Pay Later is introduced, allowing you to pay a purchase amount in installments. You pay no interest on this. The feature will also be available in the Netherlands.

In the Wallet app you can not only get an overview of all payment terms, but you also get insight into the status of an order. You can immediately see whether your package is arriving.

Cards

The Maps app is also getting an update in iOS 16 and is starting to look more and more like Google Maps. For example, you can see various buildings in 3D, just like in Google’s maps app, and Apple is introducing its own version of Streetview. The option to add up to 15 stops to a route is handy.

The link between Maps and public transport services will also be improved. This gives you more insight into departure times of trains, but also into the costs of a train ticket. It would also be possible to load your public transport card in the Maps app. Whether this is also possible in the Netherlands remains to be seen.

Share photos

Sharing photos with your family is made easier in iOS 16, thanks to a shared iCloud library. This is a standalone library that can accommodate up to five members of your family. The iPhone could even recognize that you are with your family while taking a photo, so that the captured photo is automatically placed in the shared iCloud library.

iOS 16 will be available in the fall.
