Apple’s next-generation M2 chip is already in mass production

According to recent rumors, the successor to Apple’s M1 chip is already in mass production. It will be presented in July 2021 at the earliest. The brand new processor would power the next generation of MacBooks, it reports MacRumors.

Rumor: Apple will release a new M2 chip later this year

The successor to Apple’s proprietary M1 chip went into mass production in April 2021, it said Nikkei Asia. The new chip could be produced in about three months and will be on the market in July at the earliest. That’s just in time for the next generation of MacBooks.

According to MacRumors it is a MacBook Pro with two different sizes, 14-inch and a 16-inch. The laptop is reportedly getting a completely new design. The source also speaks of a large 27-inch iMac and a smaller version of the Mac Pro, both of which will get the new M2 chip.

Apple Silicon takes over from Intel

Apple announced its first proprietary processor for the Mac in 2020 with the M1 chip. The company has been developing its own chips for iPhones and iPads for years. With the arrival of the M1 chip, Apple heralded the beginning of Apple Silicon for the Mac.

Thanks to Apple Silicon, Apple can optimize its hardware much better. The M1 chip therefore ensures faster and more energy-efficient performance compared to Macs with Intel processors. The new M2 chip – as we call it for now – is expected to be a lot faster and more economical. According to its own words, it takes about two years for Apple to fully switch to Apple Silicon.
