August’s 5 Best iOS Games: GRIS, Telling Lies, Dead Cells

We dive into the huge range of new games in the App Store and pick out the gems. These are the best iOS games of August 2019.

Best iOS Games August 2019

Game makers definitely didn’t rest in August, because this is truly one of the best months for iOS games ever. For example, the new game from the maker of Her Story can be played, and a number of top games have appeared that have already proven themselves on other platforms.

1. GRIS

GRIS is one of the most beautiful games we’ve ever played. That is immediately clear when you see a screenshot, but the game is even more beautiful in motion. In GRIS, you play as a young woman trying to cope with trauma.

This is done by collecting luminous balls in the crazy environments and returning them to a temple. Then a bridge will appear so you can continue. The game plays with different themes such as wind, water and light to keep the platforming interesting.

2. Count Lies

Do you remember Her Story? In that game, you had to search a database for video fragments to piece together a story. The creator of that game is back with Telling Lies. The concept is similar, but a lot more extensive. Including multiple characters, good actors and above all many more videos to watch. Expect another interesting story that you will piece together little by little.

This time you follow an FBI agent who is on a mission and therefore has to live separately from his partner and child. Via recorded video call messages you can look at their lives and the people around them.

3. Dead Cells

The vaunted rogue-like Dead Cells is making its way to iOS. In this game, you are a headless immortal warrior fighting your way through increasingly difficult dungeons. You get all kinds of weapons and upgrades for that. Because just because you’re immortal doesn’t mean you can’t die. If you die, you just start over from the beginning. The levels and enemies are different every time in this game, so you always have to stay on your guard.

Dead Cells has to rely on your quick reflexes. That combined with virtual buttons is not ideal. To accommodate you, the creators have put in an extra mode, where the melee attacks happen naturally. Then all you have to do is focus on shooting and dodging attacks.

4. Rogue Legacy

Speaking of games where the whole world is different every time you die, Rogue Legacy is now also available for iOS. In this insanely fun game you are mortal, but your child will follow you to hopefully get a bit further in the dungeons.

Every new character has its own problems. One has an irritable bowel and the other is cross-eyed. That has an effect on the gameplay and remains surprising and entertaining. This version also has additional content exclusive to iOS.

5. OXXO

The above games are all great and demand your full attention. That’s why we close the list this month with a nice and not too complicated puzzle game. In OXXO your goal is to connect the O’s, X’s and other shapes by sliding blocks. That’s all. The nice presentation and cool puzzles make this game more than worthwhile.
