AutoFill in iOS 12 automatically fills in passwords: that’s how it works

AutoFill in iOS 12 remembers all your usernames and passwords and automatically fills them in at apps and websites where you need to log in. Here’s what you need to know about setting up and using AutoFill.

Set up and use AutoFill

AutoFill is a handy addition to iOS 12 and makes logging in easier, faster and more secure. The feature works with all popular password managers, eliminating the need to copy and paste passwords.

Setting up AutoFill in iOS 12

You only have to set up AutoFill once to make logging in easier and faster:

  1. Go to ‘Settings’ and choose ‘Passwords and accounts’;
  2. Tap ‘Fill in automatically’ and slide the switch;
  3. If you are using another passwords app in addition to the iCloud keychain, check it.

AutoFill supports the most popular password managers of the moment such as 1Password, LastPass and Dashlane. You can add as many apps as you want: of course you must have them installed on your iPhone or iPad.

This is how you use AutoFill

AutoFill is not a separate app, but runs in the background. It only appears when you need it.

  1. Open the app or website where you want to log in;
  2. Tap the field to enter your username;
  3. Tap the notification at the bottom of your screen;
  4. It is checked whether it is you via Face ID, Touch ID or a password;
  5. Upon recognition, the username and password are now automatically entered.

Do you have multiple accounts for an app or website? Then tap the key and select the correct login details. AutoFill works in both the Safari browser and apps. Developers must provide support for the feature themselves, which means that you cannot log in automatically to all programs at this time. This is already possible in popular apps such as Instagram and Netflix. In addition, AutoFill also works on the Apple TV with tvOS 12.
