Battle Breakers: new game from Fortnite makers is disappointing

Epic Games has launched a new smartphone game in the App Store with Battle Breakers. After Fortnite, of course, we have high expectations. You can read in our review whether these are fulfilled.

Battle Breakers review

As soon as the makers of Fortnite come up with something new, we will of course pay attention. In addition to this extremely popular game, Epic Games is of course also known for Infinity Blade on smartphones and Gears of War for game consoles. The latest game is called Battle Breakers.

Battle Breakers is a tactical role-playing game. You choose a group of heroes and go out into different dungeons. There you tap crystals away, after which enemies appear. You choose during these battles which hero attacks, with a normal or extra strong attack. Such a strong attack looks flashy, but also takes energy.

Keeping track of each character’s strengths and weaknesses will help you emerge victorious and advance to more difficult dungeons. In the meantime you earn money and experience points and you can regularly unlock new heroes to form your team.

Story

The context is that monsters from outer space have trapped the best heroes in the world in crystals. It’s up to you to find those crystals, smash them and free the heroes. Those heroes then join your team. Your goal, of course, is to collect all these heroes. Preferably those with a high star rating.

Epic Games calls Battle Breakers inspired by cartoons from the 1990s. That inspiration is immediately apparent. Both in style and music. But the makers also seem to use this as an excuse to present an extremely poorly written story. It’s been a long time since we’ve been presented with such exasperating dialogues.

Not original

In any case, there are plenty of heroes to collect, and the battles are just captivating enough to keep playing. Although it mainly comes down to anime characters screaming while things explode. The more difficult missions are a bit more fun, because you actually have to take into account, for example, which elements (fire, water, nature) are strong and weak against each other.

Not the gameplay, but collecting the heroes is paramount in Battle Breakers. If that’s your thing, you can spend quite a few hours in the game without spending any money. But because there are so many of these types of games in the App Store, we would have preferred something more original from Epic Games. With Fortnite, the company has shown that it can make something extra fun from a well-known genre, but that has not been successful with Battle Breakers.
