Countless new apps appeared in 2017 as well. iPhoned takes a different approach this year and lets each editor choose one app. In our opinion, these are the very best iOS apps of the year. Today it is Rutger’s turn with HQ.
Quiz twice a day
When will we really be surprised by an app that does something completely new? I can name one this year: HQ. In November I wrote that HQ finally released another apps that you wish you had invented yourself. I still support that.
HQ is a trivia quiz with a broadcast twice a day. The American app broadcasts on American times, but the earliest is fairly conveniently at 9 p.m. Dutch time. The later is at 3am. Everyone can participate for free. If you get all the answers right after twelve questions, you will win part of the prize pool.

Participate to win
There was not yet an app like HQ. It’s a wonder it works, but it works. Young people watch less and less TV at fixed times, but an interactive quiz where money can be made seems reason enough to hook up at fixed hours twice a day. After all: you can’t look back (although people record the quiz and publish it on YouTube) and if you don’t play you can’t win.
The app has grown massively in just a month. At the end of November about 120,000 people participated, that is now regularly 600,000. The daily prize pool has increased from $ 1,000 to typically $ 1,500 at a time. Yet there is still enough to distribute, because often the questions become so difficult that only dozens of players remain of the hundreds of thousands of participants at the start.

If you always score well with quizzes, you shouldn’t miss HQ. The questions are occasionally very American, so sometimes you have to take a gamble. When will the first Dutch brand take advantage of this idea?
