BMW recalls S 1000 R and S 1000 XR: anti-wheelie may be disabled after software update

BMW has issued a recall for the 2022-2023 S 1000 R and the 2020-2023 S 1000 XR. After a software update, the anti-wheelie function may have been disabled without any indication in the display, which in the worst case could lead to an accident.

In July 2022, BMW Motorrad received a report of an accident in France involving a 2022 BMW S 1000 XR. The rider in question had lost control of the bike following an unexpected handling of the bike, which reportedly led to a crash resulting in bodily injury.

Initial reviews were inconclusive, but a second report from Turkey followed in September, this time with a 2021 S 1000 XR. It was a similar incident, but this time the rider was not injured.

The investigation continued, BMW checked how the engines were configured during production and looked at the service history, and gathered information from the field, including warranty claims, customer complaints and accident reports.

From October, technical analyzes were performed with different driving scenarios. Tests were conducted with various software configurations and mode settings in an attempt to reproduce the alleged condition as reported.

In December, BMW received a report of an incident in Belgium involving a 2021 S 1000 XR, similar to the previous incidents, but without injury.

Further analysis was carried out, which revealed that a specific software package released to dealers could inadvertently reset the anti-wheelie (Front Wheel Lift-off Assistant) to the factory setting, without the rider’s knowledge.

The optional Riding Modes Pro features an adjustable “Dynamic Pro” riding mode. In the factory setting, the parameter “Front Wheel Lift-off Assistant” is disabled, it can be set according to your own taste and taste.

However, it turned out that after a software update at the dealer, the configuration of the Dynamic Pro driving mode is reset to the factory setting, which means that the anti-wheelie is switched off. Because this is not shown in the display, the rider is not informed about this.

BMW Motorrad will now inform owners that the parameters of the Dynamic Pro driving mode have been reset to factory settings during a software update at the dealer, and are requested to check the settings and adjust them if necessary.

You will also be asked to contact the dealer so that they can inspect the engine and update the service records. Should an incident have occurred prior to the recall, this will be covered by the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty program.
