Bluetooth earphones are nice to use while working or on the go to listen to music, follow audiobooks or podcasts or make phone calls. When you use them during activities, it is often a challenge to hold the headset in your ears. Due to the movements or even sweating, the caps can fall out of your ears, especially if you use Airpods-like in-ears, which do not have rubber tips to get the earbuds to size. The Bose Sport Earbuds are (as the name suggests) designed to stay in place during exercise.

Bose uses a few tricks to hold the in-ears in the ears. First of all, by not letting the ears weigh too much and by keeping the size modest, so that the weight is also well distributed. There are also rubber tips, of which there are three different sizes in the box. Bose has opted for oval-shaped tips that go into the ears. Personally, I find that less pleasant for the wearing comfort, but that of course depends on your own ears.

In addition to the rubber tips, there are a kind of rubber brackets, or wings, that sit in your ear and prevent the ears from moving or slipping slowly. In practice, the earbuds stay in place with me, even when running longer distances, where other ears often slip away slowly. The risk of them falling out of your ear is much smaller, but of course it is still possible. I would not recommend a Viking run or other very fanatic activity with the Bose Sport Earbuds. Despite the fact that the Sport Earbuds are resistant to splashing water due to their IPX4 rating.

Bose Sport Earbuds: Sound quality

Of course, Bose has a reputation to uphold when it comes to sound quality. But to be fair, with a high suggested retail price of 200 euros for in-ears without noise reduction, you can at least expect an impressive sound quality. Fortunately, Bose is able to meet expectations in that area. In terms of sound quality, it passes in-ears from competitors in about the same price range, such as Apple, Samsung, Teufel and Jabra. Because the fit is good and the earbuds stay firmly in place, the music comes into its own and closes off the environment (even without noise reduction) properly.

Bose acted smartly by boosting the bass sound of the Sport Earbuds. This gives you that extra push during sports with exciting music. The sound quality does not suffer further, because it is still well balanced with its high and mid tones. All details and instruments are clearly audible, although the boosted bass may be less pleasant with audiobooks, podcasts or relaxing music.

An app is available to connect and set up your Bose earphones with your smartphone. It’s a bit strange that you need a Bose account for this. This does not add anything for you as a user and is only nice for Bose to collect more accurate data. Although the sound adjustment can appeal to me, the app lacks an equalizer to adjust the sound quality as desired. There are also too few options for configuring the tap control on the earbuds themselves. For example, I miss the ability to pause and restart music.

Battery life

Because the Bose Sport Earbuds do not have noise cancellation or an ambient mode, the battery life is fine. Bose claims that the earbuds last about five hours on a full charge, and this is about right. The charging box has enough battery capacity to fully charge the earphones about four times. The box charges via USB-C. Wireless charging is unfortunately missing.

Conclusion: Buy Bose Sport Earbuds?

The Bose Sports Earbuds are pricey, but as earphones they score very well on all important points. Sound quality, wearing comfort, fit and battery life. They are ideal for sports, but also normal use on the road, conversations and at work are excellent conditions for the ears. Downsides are in the functionality, such as the limited options and the mandatory Bose account in the app and the lack of noise cancellation or ambient pass-through.
