We all consist of lifeless material atoms, these in turn from protons, electrons and neutrons, and these in turn from quarks. But how is it possible that we as humans have a consciousness if we consist of lifeless material?

Answer
Dear Wim,
Life is wonderful, every scientist will say that. Scientists can analyze this miracle and explain it in steps: from simple atoms complex molecules can arise, complex molecules can organize into simple cells, simple cells can become more complex and form multicellular bodies, multicellular animals and plants can become very complex. Ultimately, animals have evolved brains that can perform increasingly complex functions. Human consciousness is perhaps a kind of “side effect” associated with the very complex brain we have.
The great miracle, whether you consider simple life forms like bacteria or complex human brains, is that molecules work together to evolve increasing complexity. From a scientific point of view, this collaboration seems to have only one goal: the multiplication of the hereditary material (DNA).
