A burned palate hurts uncomfortably. Here you can find out what you can do if you have burned yourself to hot drinks or food.

The oral mucosa that covers our entire mouth is very sensitive. If we eat or drink something hot, we can quickly burn the palate or tongue. Particularly hot liquids such as tea or soup often lead to burns because we swallow them down without chewing beforehand. But dishes from the oven, such as baked or oven vegetables, are also dangerous. The water content in the vegetables heats up strongly, appears while chewing and quickly spreads throughout the mouth.

To avoid burns, you should eat carefully. It is worthwhile to leave the food briefly and then test whether it has cooled enough. If you still burned the palate, you can relieve the feeling of pain.

A burned palate is uncomfortable, but pain doesn’t have to be. With the following home remedies you can do something about it:

  • Ice cubes: It is important to cool burns as soon as possible. With a burned palate, it is best to take an ice cube and let it melt on the palate. This relieves pain and can prevent fire bubbles from forming and the mucous membrane is unnecessarily damaged. So that there is no frosty, you should let the ice cube hike back and forth in your mouth. If you don’t have an ice cube at hand, drink cold water and keep it in your mouth for some time.

  • Chamber tea: Later you can drink cold or lukewarm chamomile tea or gargle with it. It calms the oral mucosa and has an antibacterial effect. The best combination are ice cubes made of chamomile tea. If you fear that the burn will be pain for a while, let some tea cool completely and freeze it. So you can relieve the burn for a few days and have a supply if you will be dealing with a burned palate again at some point.

  • Lactic acid bacteria: milk, buttermilk or yogurt contain many lactic acid bacteria that can help with wound healing if you have burned the palate. It is a pleasant side effect that these foods are stored cool. If you have dairy products in the house, just keep it in your mouth for a while to relieve the symptoms.

  • Gurgel water: To avoid infection, you should gargle with a solution. Mix three to five drops of tea tree oil with half a glass of water and gurgle in detail. The oil can have an anti -inflammatory effect. A mouthwash with tea tree oil is also suitable for gargling with a burned palate. If you don’t have a tea tree oil, you can alternatively gargle with salt water, for example.

Incidentally, these tips and tricks also provide relief if you have burned your tongue.

If you have provided first aid to your burned palate, continue to make sure that it can heal completely. Until the burn has completely subsided, you should do without the following:

  • Hot drinks or food: eat everything lukewarm. This is not only more pleasant, but also preserves you from further burns.

  • Hard, crumbly food: for example, do without dry pastries, bread with hard crust or chips. Sharp edges can open the wound on the palate.

  • Stark or sharp food: Avoid any strong irritation of your oral mucosa.

  • Sours, carbonated drinks: lemonades or drinks with lemon juice can burn very uncomfortably. The same applies to drinks that contain a lot of carbon dioxide.

Caution is also required when brushing your teeth. Be attentive so that you do not accidentally come to the irritated places with the bristles. Watch the development of your burned palate carefully and go to a doctor’s office if the palate gets inflamed or no healing occurs.
