Calculator app expanded with math notes, unit conversion and more

Available from iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS Sequoia

Apple has updated the Calculator app for iPhone and Mac, and for the first time, the Calculator app is also available on iPad. Starting with iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, you can convert units and currencies, access the calculator, and change the display, among other features.

In addition, you also get direct access to the new math notes from the Calculator application. Here you can type or write down mathematical formulas and see directly how they are solved in your own handwriting.

Redesigned interface

Since the application is now also available on the iPad, Apple has redesigned the interface of the Calculator application for the iPhone, iPad and Mac. This way, you can immediately use the scientific calculator in portrait orientation on an iPhone and you can use the full screen of the iPad to perform calculations. Follow the steps below to change the display of the Calculator application:

  • Open the Calculator app
  • Tap or click the calculator icon
  • Select ‘Standard’ or ‘Scientific’
  • On a Mac you also have the option of ‘Programmer’

Convert units and currencies

Finally, you can convert units and currencies directly from the Calculator application. Handy when you are traveling or when you want to cook an American recipe.

  • Open the Calculator app
  • Tap or click the calculator icon
  • Select ‘Convert’

Next, you can customize the units. Tap or click on the components and make a selection. This way, you can calculate angles, area, weight, volume, time, temperature, speeds, air pressure, power, length, fuel, force, energy, currency, and data. Thanks to this addition, you can really perform all calculations from one application.

Consult history

In previous versions, all calculations were immediately cleared, but starting with iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, this is no longer the case. To see previous calculations from the past seven days, tap the three horizontal lines in the upper left. On a Mac, you can see these by tapping the View menu bar and then tapping Show History.

Math notes

Finally, from the Calculator application you can also use math notes that are part of the renewed Notes app. In these notes you can type or write down math formulas and see directly how they are solved in your own handwriting.

Machine learning also enables iOS, iPadOS, and macOS to automatically solve formulas and sums. You can also assign values ​​to variables, which is useful when you’re learning new concepts in school or creating a budget.

The new Graphs feature lets you type or write an equation and convert it to a graph with a single tap. You can even graph multiple equations on the same graph so you can see how they relate to each other. Math notes can be found in the Notes app.
