Can a lion that engages in too much alpha behavior become hoarse from excessive roaring? Can a cat that howls for too long at some point no longer meow due to an overuse of the vocal cords?
Answer
Hi Marie,
animals can indeed become hoarse, but this is usually after an infection of the (upper) respiratory tract. Whether lions can become hoarse by roaring too much and too loud is unknown to me, but dogs can indeed become hoarse by barking too much, probably due to a (temporary) irritation of the larynx. If your animal is hoarse, I still recommend that you visit your vet!
