Is there scientific evidence that if you are born at a certain time when the stars or planets are in a certain position, for example, that you have special gifts or a fixed destiny?
Answer
Good that you ask that question, it shows that you have a justified suspicion of astrology.
There is no evidence whatsoever that the position of stars and planets would affect your character or future. Astrology is not a science. It is an ancient superstition, originated in ancient history by ancient civilizations that saw the stars but had no explanation for it, especially not for those planets that move slowly opposite the stars. So they looked at that sky with awe, but also with a certain reassurance, because everything was so regular and predictable. We now know that none of it is true, that constellations have no physical meaning whatsoever. But of course people would like to know something about the future, and because the orbit of stars and planets is perfectly predictable, they transposed that predictability to human life. One felt a lot “led” by stars, and if something went wrong in life one could put the blame on the stars.
After 5000 years of astrology, no scientific proof of the correctness has ever been given. You can believe in it if you really need it, but it is and remains fake. The most important principle in scientific methodology is the principle of the burden of proof: anyone who makes a scientific statement must also provide the required evidence for it. Every scientist on this forum knows that when he publishes results, those results must be accompanied by the necessary detailed evidence, so that the other scientists can evaluate the reasoning followed, and repeat the experiments and calculations performed: controllability and repeatability are essential features of Research. This is completely lacking in astrology. That’s why you can’t study astrology at a university. That is why people also ask “DO you BELIEVE in astrology?”. I have never heard anyone ask, “Do you believe in mathematics, or do you believe in chemistry?” It is not a matter of belief, for those who doubt can be convinced by undeniable proofs and experiments.
As a scientist I don’t have to prove that astrology doesn’t work: again, the burden of proof lies with the astrologers because they make the statement. And as long as they do not provide any proof, a good scientist has the right and even the obligation to doubt the correctness. It is up to the astrologers to convince us, but through controllable and repeatable experiments and reasoning.
In short, astrology is a quackery, believe it or not. There is as much reason to believe in astrology as there is in the existence of the Klingons from Star Trek or the Jedi from Star Wars. All of western Europe has believed in witches for centuries. It was believed that old ladies could fly through the air on their broomsticks. Is the number of people who believed in it, and the duration (a few centuries) proof that witches really exist?
And that horoscopes sometimes come true, yes they do: because they are so vaguely drafted that someone who wants to believe in them a priori will always find something that is right, and close their eyes to everything else that is not right. Want to try it? From tomorrow, systematically read the horoscope of a sign other than yours, you will see that it is equally correct and incorrect.
