In Windows, do you suddenly see different characters on the screen than you type on the keyboard? Then the wrong keyboard is set.
Languages on the PC
You can set multiple languages on the computer. Each language comes with a standard keyboard. However, you can accidentally change the settings of the keyboard, for example by using a key combination. The correct keyboard is then no longer selected for your language. Therefore, different characters appear on the screen than you type on the keyboard.
Change language
Annoying when the keyboard acts weird, but luckily that is quickly resolved. Press the Ctrl and Shift keys simultaneously. Do the weird or strange signs stay? Then do the following:
- Click the Start button.
- click on Institutions (cogwheel icon) > Time and language.
- In Windows 10, click Language. In Windows 11, click Language & Region.
- Open the language options:
- In Windows 10, under ‘Preferred languages’, click Dutch (the Netherlands) > Options.
- Click in Windows 11 behind ‘Nederlands (Netherlands)’ on the icon with the three dots > Language options.
- One or more keyboards are listed under ‘Keyboards’. The correct keyboard is ‘United States (International) Qwerty’.
- Is this keyboard not there? Then click on Add a keyboard and then click on the appropriate keyboard.
- Do you have two keyboards? Delete the wrong one so that only ‘United States (International) Qwerty’ is left. This prevents you from accidentally switching keyboard settings.
- Click on the wrong keyboard in Windows 10 > remove.
- In Windows 11, click on the three dots > . behind the wrong keyboard remove.
