Check if password has been hacked

Has there been a data breach? See if your account information has been leaked. If so, change your passwords.

Unfortunately, a data breach sometimes occurs. Passwords and/or e-mail addresses are then, so to speak, on the street. The cause is often a hacker or spambot. Not pleasant, because that’s how criminals get to your account information. If you therefore hear that there has been a (major) data breach, check whether your data is part of this. Here is a special website for: haveibeenpwnd.com The site has a crazy name, but it is reliable. This website is in English. In the steps below we therefore indicate the meaning of the various buttons and phrases that you come across.

Here’s how to check if your account information has been leaked:

  • Go to the site haveibeenpwned.com
  • click on Email address.
  • Enter your email address.
  • Press the button Pwnd.
  • Does a green background appear with the text ‘Good news – no pwnage found!’? Good news! There is nothing wrong with your account. You don’t have to do anything anymore
  • Do you see a red background that says ‘Oh no – pwned!’? Bad news: your email address is unfortunately in a list of leaked data. Follow the following steps:
    • Scroll down and under “Breaches you were pwned in” see previous leaks where your data has been spread. All leaks have a year. Have you changed the password after that year? Then the account is safe and you don’t have to do anything. Did you change the password some time ago? Then do the following:
      • Change your email account password.
      • Do you use the combination of email address and password on multiple sites/accounts? Change the password in those places as well.
      • Change the password for any other services listed on the page.
