Among macOS users, the CleanMyMac X app is a very popular app to free up valuable disk space on your hard drive or SSD. Over the years, the app has gained several additional useful features. One of these features is the CleanMyMac X menu, a handy system overview that you can activate from the macOS menu bar.
In the overview you get information about your hard disk/SSD, memory, CPU, WiFi and connected devices. In addition, you can also check the status of Moonlock, the built-in malware scanner.
When you use CleanMyMac X, you can activate the menu in the menu bar via the preferences. To do this, follow the steps below:
- Open the CleanMyMac X app
- Go to CleanMyMac
- Click on Settings
- Select ‘Menu’ from the preference bar
- On the Menu tab, activate the ‘Switch menu’ option

The CleanMyMac will now appear in the macOS menu bar (screen with a wiper). By clicking on it the menu appears. The menu shows the free space on your SSD (hard disk), free memory, CPU load, WiFi speeds and the status of connected devices.
Recommendations also appear and you can view the status of your Dropbox account in the menu. You can activate or deactivate both of these options via the settings.
Battery status of connected devices and alerts
If you use a wireless mouse and keyboard, like most iMac users, you can directly view the battery status of these devices in the CleanMyMac X menu. Under ‘Connected devices’ you can find the battery status of the wireless keyboard and mouse. If your Mac is connected to your iPhone or Airpods, the battery status is also displayed.

The menu has an incredibly useful function that informs you when the battery of a connected device is low. When the battery percentage of your mouse or keyboard drops below 20%, a pop-up message will automatically appear on your Mac screen. This message indicates that the device’s battery is low and that it is time to charge it.
Thanks to this notification, you will know in time when the battery of your mouse or keyboard is almost empty.
View device battery status without CleanMyMac
If you do not have the CleanMyMac X, you can also view the battery status of Bluetooth devices using the Bluetooth settings. To do this, you must activate the Bluetooth settings in the macOS bar. You can activate this as follows:
- Go to System Settings
- Select ‘Control Panel’ in the left column
- In the right column, select Bluetooth â–¸ Show in menu bar

The Bluetooth symbol will now be visible in the macOS menu bar. By clicking on this you will see connected Bluetooth devices with their corresponding battery status.
