You can connect up to two 6K screens to the 16-inch MacBook Pro. You do have to take a number of things into account. We’ll tell you all about it in this tip article.
Connecting displays to 16-inch MacBook Pro
The 16-inch MacBook Pro is a powerful laptop made for the professional. Whether you are a designer, musician or scientist: sometimes an extra display comes in handy. Fortunately, the new MacBook Pro offers all the possibilities for this.
The 16-inch MacBook Pro has four Thunderbolt 3 ports. To get you started, we have listed four configurations below with which you can connect up to four screens.
- Two 6K displays with resolutions of 6016 by 3384 pixels
- Two 5K displays with resolutions of 5120 by 2880 pixels
- Four 4K displays with resolutions of 4096 by 2304 pixels
- One 5K display and three 4K displays.
The attentive reader will notice that you can therefore connect two Pro Displays to the new MacBook. These powerful screens have not yet received a release date, but have already been announced last summer. With all the above configurations we also assume a 60Hz refresh rate, the default frequency.

The conditions
It goes without saying that connecting two 6K monitors is a major burden for the MacBook Pro. To achieve the maximum result, Apple recommends connecting one monitor to both sides of the laptop. The laptop therefore has two buses: one for the left and one for the right.
It is not intended to connect more than two displays to one bus. If you connect a 5K or 6K display (or 4K display with multi-cable), you must use a different bus for each display. In this way you divide the workload and load evenly and prevent technical problems.
