The design of smartphones does not stand still. Manufacturers are all the time looking for new designs for their phones that can help them beat the competition. An example of this is the rise of foldable smartphones, a new product category that is still in its infancy.

Phone brands are exploring how to get the most out of foldable screens and sometimes that results in eye-catching designs. LetsGoDigital has discovered that Samsung has filed a patent with the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO) in 2021 regarding a design for foldables.

This is how the concept works

On the left side of the phone, an extra screen area can be unfolded at the top. When that screen is closed, it occupies a part on the back of the phone until it is next to the camera setup. The hinge for this folding machine is located at the bottom left of the smartphone and magnets hold the screen at the back. According to the information, Samsung uses its Ultra Thing Glass (UTG) for foldables, a technique we already know from the Galaxy Z Fold series.

But what can you do with such an extra screen area? First of all, it offers extra space for multitasking and it somewhat reminds us of the LG Wing which also came with extra screen space on either side of the smartphone. You could open a separate app on the extra screen. A second advantage is that when the screen is on the back, it can serve as a viewfinder for the camera. In other words, you can take much better selfies with the main lens of a smartphone and at the same time a notch in the screen becomes unnecessary.

What you should know about these kinds of patents is that there is no guarantee that Samsung will actually use the technology in its smartphones. We are very curious what you think of this concept? Do you think such a screen that partially folds on the side is a good idea? Let us know in the comments at the bottom of this article.
