Create a math note in the Notes app

Since iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, Apple has introduced math notes in both the Calculator and Notes apps. This function makes it possible to type or write mathematical formulas and equations, with the solution immediately visible in your own handwriting.

Thanks to machine learning, iOS, iPadOS and macOS can automatically solve formulas and sums. You can also assign values to the variables, which can come in handy when, for example, learning new concepts at school or making a budget.

It is up to the user to determine how advanced the math note becomes. In principle, Notes can recognize simple calculations such as sums or percentages, but you can also go wild with complex mathematical formulas.

In the Notes app you can simply type or write down mathematical formulas. As soon as you type an equal sign (=), the answer will automatically appear. This works with both simple sums and more complex mathematical calculations

On the iPad you can also use the Apple Pencil to write down formulas. The app will convert the handwritten notes to text and can even generate graphs based on entered formulas.

Example of math notes in the Notes app

You can make both simple and complex calculations in the Notes. The example below assumes a simple calculation. We give the variable x the value 5 and then perform the calculation 4x + 10. The result will be 30.

  • Open the Notes app on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac
  • Tap the icon to start a new note.
  • Type or write the mathematical formula, for example:
    x = 5
    4x + 10 =

As soon as you type or write the equal sign (=), the app will automatically calculate the formula. Tap or click Solve to add the result of the formula. Once you have written the formula, the answer will be displayed in your own handwriting.
