With the help of the photos application for iPhone, iPad and Mac you can easily manage and synchronize your photo library with all your devices via iCloud. You can use folders to keep the overview.
Here you can place multiple albums and folders in so that you get a structured overview with all your photos and videos. We explain how you can create a folder in photos for iPhone, iPad and Mac. These folders are then synchronized with iCloud.
Difference between folders and albums
Folders and albums, both seem to have the same goal, but there is a difference. Albums exist Only from photos and videoson the other hand, folders can be used to group albums and other folders.
We explain it with an example: you can create a folder ‘travel’ and place all the albums of different journeys in it. Because you can add multiple albums and folders in folders, it is possible to make an extra folder in the folder. Example: In the ‘Travel’ folder you create new folders with dates. This way you can place all journeys from last year in the desired folder, etc.
Add folders to photos app
- Open photos for iPhone or iPad
- Navigate to ‘albums’
- Tap ‘Create’
- Choose ‘new folder’
- Fill in a desired name
Do you still have iOS 17 or earlier? Then after opening ‘albums’ you have to tap ‘Change’ and then on the Plus button to create a new folder.

Once you have created a new folder you will get the suggestion to add albums to this folder with the ‘Add albums’ button.
After you have created a folder you can place multiple folders in this folder. To do this, open the desired folder in the album overview and then tap ‘Add’ to create a new folder.
Create folders on a Mac
- Open photos for Mac
- Click in the menu bar on ‘Archive’
- Choose ‘new folder’
- Enter the desired name
Then you can easily drag albums and other folders to the just created folder. This way you can quickly and easily manage all albums and folders on your Mac

Move albums to another folder
Unfortunately it is not yet possible to move existing albums to a new folder on an iPhone or iPad. The only solution is to create a new album with the same name in the folder. Then you can move all the photos in the ‘existing’ old ‘album to the’ new ‘album, then you can remove the old album. Of course you can easily drag the album to a folder via a Mac.
