Create folders in Windows 10 Mail

Mail for Windows 10 has some default folders like Inbox, Drafts, and Sent. If you want to organize your mail neatly, create your own folders.

Mail is Windows 10’s email program. It’s an app without bells and whistles. So very suitable for people who like simplicity. By default, the program knows the folders Inbox, Drafts, Deleted Items and the like. Mail arrives in the Inbox by default. You create extra folders yourself to store e-mails about a certain subject.

With folders you maintain an overview. For example, create a separate folder for SeniorWeb mail or all correspondence about your insurance. Add a folder like this:

  • Open Mail.
  • Click in the left part on folders.
  • A gray menu slides out. This contains all folders that are currently in the mail program. At the top, click the plus sign next to ‘All folders’.
  • A white box with a blue border appears. Type a name for the new folder.
  • Press the Enter key.

The map is in the overview on the left. The menu with all folders disappears quickly if you are not working in it. Then click on More or folders > the folder name to open the folder.

Email messages arrive in the Inbox folder by default. To move an email to another folder:

  • Click the folder containing the email you want to move.
  • Right-click on the respective email.
  • click on Move.
  • Click on the folder where the email should go.

The mail is immediately in the other folder.

You can also move multiple emails at once. They must all be in the same folder.

  • Click on the icon of ‘Activate selection mode’ at the top:

Selection mode of the e-mail program Mail

  • Click on the boxes for the messages you want to move.
  • Right click on one of the selected emails.
  • click on Move.
  • Click on the folder where the emails should go.

If you often use a folder, it is easier to add it to your favorites. This way the folder will always be visible. Set up is as follows:

  • click on More.
  • Right click on the folder.
  • click on Add to Favorites.

The folder is directly listed under ‘Folders’.

Do you not use a folder that often? Then it is not necessary to have him as a ‘favorite’. Here’s how to make a folder ‘normal’ again:

  • Under ‘Folders’, right-click the desired folder.
  • click on Remove from favorites.

The folder is no longer in the list under ‘Folders’. But still in the gray overview with all folders. You can open it by clicking folders or More.
