The new Spotify function ‘Group Session’ is a useful mode if you are listening to music with your friends on the couch. Together you contribute to the playlist.
Create a playlist together with Group Session
Group Session allows anyone in Spotify to add songs to the playlist and queue them up. It was already possible to make a playlist public and share it so that different people could add songs. With Group Session, however, it is for the first time possible to also take over control of the playlist.
The function is very useful when you are together with a group of people. Many people are now confined to their homes, but according to the streaming service, the function is also ideal for a group of people who spend a long time in the house together.
This is how Group Session works
Group Session is enabled by the first person having a QR code scanned by other users. This works as follows:
- Open Spotify and turn on a song;
- In the playback menu, tap the Connect icon (a screen with a speaker) at the bottom left;
- Here you can see the code. These can scan others. Does anyone else have a code? Then tap ‘Scan to participate’ under the code;
- Grant access to your camera and point your camera at someone else’s code.
Once the code is scanned by someone, that person will have as much access as the person who created the playlist. Anyone can now add songs to the playlist and queue them up. Authorized persons can also pause the music or even skip a song.
Finished listening? You end the listening session by tapping the Connect icon again. Then tap ‘End session’ and confirm your choice. The feature is currently rolling out to Premium users of Spotify. It’s still a beta version, so over time the streaming service will further improve the feature.
