Whether you want to restore an old app icon, or change a logo for some other reason, you can change a Mac app icon.
How to adjust a Mac app icon
You might not know it yet, but it’s quite easy to make the app icons on the Mac look completely different. Unlike the logos of apps on your iPhone, you can manually adjust these on your Mac to an image of your choice.
For example, you can replace an old icon of an app if it is modified with an update, or make a square icon round if it fits better with the other apps in your Dock.
- Create an image that you want to use as an app icon and save it as jpeg;
- Open the Finder and click on ‘Programs’ in the left sidebar;
- Click on the app whose icon you want to change with the right mouse button and choose ‘Get info’;
- Copy the image of the new app icon by clicking CMD + C;
- Click on the small image in the top left of the ‘Show Info’ window;
- Press CMD + V to replace the icon with your image;
- Close and reopen the app to activate the app icon.
Please keep this in mind
When creating a new app icon, keep in mind to cut out the white space around an icon in a photo editing app. Otherwise, an ugly border will remain around the icon when you place it in the dock.
If you want to restore the original app icon, you can again click on the small app icon via the ‘Get info’ button. Then press the backspace button on your keyboard to delete your own image and automatically get the old icon back.
