Group of art historians

The DailyArt app was created by Zuzanna Stanska from Poland, a young entrepreneur and well-known figure in the field of museum innovations. Art history is a great thing and the goal of the app is for it to be understood by the masses. In his own words, you often find difficult and boring descriptions of the works of art in museums and galleries, which are neither informative nor educational. With DailyArt they want to share art history stories in the most interesting and digestible way.

The team behind the app consists of a group of art historians. They usually write the descriptions themselves or get it from the museums. In some cases, their volunteers also work on it. The images are usually in the public domain, or acquire the rights to use them. Because not all rights have been released, you may not be able to find some artworks in the app.

A new work of art every day

The goal of DailyArt is to present you with a new work of art every day with background information about the work and the artist. Not only does it explain what the work is about or what the painter’s intention is, it often also states why the work of art is so special.

DailyArt: art history app

The strength of DailyArt is to highlight all kinds of works of art, from famous masterpieces to paintings by lesser-known artists. Every day you can decide when you will receive a notification to stay informed about the new batch of art history.

Dutch explanation

All featured works of art are described in Dutch by an enthusiastic team and volunteers. The translators ensure that the work of art is explained in an understandable language, so that novice art lovers or people who are just discovering art can understand what is meant.

If there is no Dutch translation available, you can use a translation button, especially when parts were added to the database at the launch of the application (more than 10 years ago).

Discover collections

The application is more than a new work of art every day. As the name suggests, you can discover more art via the ‘Discover’ tab. You will regularly find new collections here on certain themes, artists, periods, styles and more.

Dailyart collections

Discover new masterpieces, unknown artists, museums or special styles. From the Dutch Renaissance to futurism. Japanese Ukiyo-e art and American modernism are also discussed.

In the app you can discover city guides, so you can look for masterpieces and interesting museums in a specific city.

DailyArt magazine and shop

In addition to the application, DailyArt also has a magazine with more art history stories and can be found in the DailyArt Shop some cool artistic physical products back. A link to both websites can be found in the application and you will regularly find a reference to the online magazine with additional explanations, stories or an accompanying quiz. Unfortunately, the magazine and shop are external and cannot be found directly in the app.

Free or subscription

The application is free to use for a limited period of time. Every day you can view the daily artwork, read the information and also look back at the featured artworks from the past few days. Through discover you have access to a select offer.

Search DailyArt

If you also want to be able to search their database of more than 4,000 works of art, save items as favorites or view more collections and masterpieces, you can take advantage of the subscription. You also get access to the biography of more than 1,200 artists and you can view information about the collections of more than 600 museums. You can choose a monthly or annual subscription.

DailyArt is an excellent application if you want to update your knowledge about art and discover your new masterpieces. With a database of more than 4,000 works, 1,200 artists and 600 museums, you have plenty to read and see. The city guides with cultural tips are highly recommended and the collections show you new insights into different topics, influences and styles. I am also a fan of their DailyArt Magazine, but unfortunately it is not directly incorporated into their application. Unfortunately, the pricey subscription can be a barrier for people who are just getting acquainted with art history.

As an extra tip I would like to read the avrotros series ‘Krabbé is looking‘ to share. In it, Jeroen Krabbé travels in the footsteps of various artists, including Frida Kahlo and Vincent van Gogh. The series can be seen on NLziet and NPO Start.
