Dell Technologies has released a special BIOS tool to better protect home workers from hacker attacks. According to Dell, in a period when a lot of work is done remotely, it is extra important to properly protect the home work equipment.
With worldwide measures against the coronavirus, people are obliged to work from home. In many cases, this is not only bad for the company, but can also jeopardize digital security. Dell therefore comes with a special software for the BIOS that alerts corporate system administrators when suspicious changes are made to the BIOS.
The software, called Dell SafeBIOS Events & Indicators of Attack (IoA), tracks changes made to the BIOS and can send an alert to a central system if needed. In addition, SafeBIOS protects against changes made to the system before the computer is started.
Take care with photos of working from home.
Unfortunately, because the software requires the BIOS to be able to share the necessary data remotely with the system administrators system, the software will not be available for all Dell products. Currently, the BIOS update with Dell SafeBIOS Events & Indicators of Attack is available for the Latitude, Precision, Optiplex, Vostro and XPS systems.
Network attacks at the BIOS level are very dangerous and can sometimes not be detected and destroyed by antivirus software. Although the software can now only be used by companies, Dell therefore indicates that the update in modified form will soon be available to consumers. It is not yet known when that will be exactly and how the consumer will be warned.
