Disable automatic loading of images in Mail

If you often use your iPhone on the mobile data network, it may not be useful that Mail constantly downloads all new e-mail with images. All received images are automatically loaded.

This is of course not a problem if you are connected to a wireless internet connection (Wi-Fi). If this is not the case, this will be at the expense of your data bundle. Fortunately, you can disable automatic loading and downloading of images for Mail.

Disable images in Mail

  • Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad
  • Navigate to ‘Mail’
  • Tap ‘Privacy Protection’
  • If necessary, disable the ‘Protect activities in Mail’ option
  • Then enable ‘Block external content’

Do you have iOS 14 or older? Then you can disable the automatic loading of images via Settings â–¸ Mail â–¸ disable ‘Load images’.

Disable loading external content in Mail on Mac

On a Mac you can enable this via Mail â–¸ menu bar â–¸ Mail â–¸ Settings / Preferences â–¸ Privacy â–¸ uncheck the ‘Protect activities in Mail’ option. Then you can block the external material.

Loading images

Now when you receive an email containing an image, it will not be downloaded and displayed automatically. To download it, tap or click “Load All Images” or “Load External Content” at the top of the message. The image is automatically retrieved and displayed. This allows you to determine when an image is loaded and over which network.
