Now that it is almost summer vacation, a lot of people go on holiday abroad. When you are abroad, your iPhone switches to ‘roaming’. This means that from that moment on you use a data connection on a foreign network.
Since June 2017, the roaming costs for your mobile subscription have been completely abolished in the entire EU. This means that you can call, text and use the internet in the European Union according to the same rate as at home. In addition, your current bundle is also valid in the EU. Costs can be charged outside the EU. In that case it is best to disable roaming and use an ESIM.
Disable mobile data on iPhone
You can switch off the mobile internet in its entirety on your iPhone, this can also be useful in the Netherlands itself if you still have a limited data bundle. Switching off is fairly easy via the settings of your iPhone.
- Open settings
- Navigate to mobile network
- Switch off ‘mobile data’
Have you activated several mobile subscriptions? Then tap in the list on ‘Mobile Data’ and choose ‘OFF’. Immediately the connection with the mobile network is switched off and your iPhone can no longer use the mobile internet to collect data. This is then only possible via WiFi.

Not only can you change this from the Settings app. It is also possible to disable mobile data via the control panel.
Only switch off roaming for abroad
Abroad you can also choose to only disable dataoaming, you do this via the steps below:
- Open ‘settings’
- Go to ‘Mobile Network’
- Choose ‘Options Mobile Data’
- Switch off ‘Dataroaming’
Do you use multiple mobile subscriptions? Then tap ‘SIM cards’ on the desired subscription and then switch off ‘dataoaming’.

From that moment on you cannot only use the mobile internet abroad, but in your home country. It is advisable to disable dataoaming when you go on holiday outside the EU or restrictions have been imposed and only switching on when you actually need the internet.
Esim on vacation
Are you going abroad soon? Then you undoubtedly want to remain connected to the internet during your trip. Within the EU you can continue to use your data bundle without extra costs, but beyond that is another case. Fortunately, Esim is the solution.
This digital SIM card then gives you access to affordable data bundles, not only outside the EU, but also within it if you need just a little more data. We list the three best Esim apps for you so that you can get started right away. You can read how Esim works exactly on holiday in our ESIM manual for traveling.
