When you are typing on your iPhone, letters are automatically enlarged. These pop-ups can be useful, but also distracting. We explain how to turn this off in three steps.
Disable keyboard popup
The keyboard popup has been present in iOS for years. When you press the screen, a preview of the relevant test appears. The letter is made larger than the rest in a small window.
This is useful, because you can check if you have entered the correct letter. On the other hand, the animation can also take the ‘momentum’ out of typing, and thus be disturbing. In addition, people can more easily read along with your conversation by following letter by letter. Fortunately, it is therefore possible to disable the keyboard pop-up. To do this, follow the steps below.
- In the Settings app, go to ‘General’;
- Open ‘Keyboards’ and scroll down;
- In this menu you see all the features of the keyboard that you can turn on or off. Slide the button next to Character Preview to the left to turn it off.
Phones keep getting bigger
From now on you will no longer be bothered by the pop-up. This option only affects the standard Apple keyboard. Alternative keyboards don’t take it into account, so you’ll have to dive into the settings for this to get the same result.
Keyboard pop-up has been around since the first iOS version, but can also be turned off since version 9. Since then, the phone screens have gotten bigger and bigger, so people generally make fewer typos and so the popup is less necessary.
