For the iPhone 15 Pro (Max), Apple has replaced the sound switch with a multifunctional action button. As soon as you press the button, an action is started. To compensate for the ‘lack’ of the sound switch, Apple has added a new mute symbol to iOS.
This means that you can see directly from the status bar next to the clock whether the sound of the device is on or off. Maybe you always have your iPhone on silent and this symbol is unnecessary, so you can easily hide it.
Disable mute icon status bar
- Open Settings on your iPhone
- Navigate to ‘Hear and feel’
- Disable the ‘Show in status bar’ option under ‘Silent mode’
- Immediately the bell symbol will be removed from the status bar

Check silent mode status
Apple added the bell symbol to the status bar because on devices with a sound switch you can easily see whether your device is on silent or not. This showed an orange line when the sound was turned off.
Do you hide the symbol next to the clock? Then you can of course check in other ways whether your iPhone is on silent or not. To do this, open the Control Center by swiping down from the top right corner. Then check the bell symbol. Is this crossed out? Then the sound is off.

You can also check the status of silent mode via Settings â–¸ Hearing & Feel at the top.
